Coral Fern Gully Walk
Time: 1 hour
Difficulty: Moderate – some small hills
Time: 40 mins
Pram Friendly: Yes – along the river walk
Pet Friendly: Yes
I have driven past this walk many many times before but had never stopped in. I have now done it a few times and it is a beautiful walk. The volunteers have done such an incredible job, the timber work with the signs & seats scattered throughout are amazing. Unfortunately you can still see remnants of the 2009 bush fires that swept through the area, as you walk amongst the blackened trees.
Getting there: The park is situated between Morwell and Mirboo North on the Strzelecki Highway. Very simple to get to but it is on a busy road so just be careful when turning off as it comes up quite fast. Again google can help you find it, its also on my map page above.
You have the option to do 3 different walks here - The Warriors Walk, Coral Fern Gully Walk & The River Walk. All the walks are very well signed, so which ever walk you choose you won’t have a problem navigating your way around. If you’re looking for a workout the Warriors Walk is for you, if you’re looking for a leisurely stroll go for the River Walk & if your looking for something in between then head for the Coral Fern Gully Walk.
If you are planning on doing either the Coral Fern Gully or Warriors walks, I would suggest turning left at the first intersection and then you get to walk next to the river last. I’m all about leaving the best for last.
On either of these walks you will also come across a junction that has some picnic tables. Here you can walk along a small path to a Tree Fern Gully lookout which overlooks a gully of ferns. You will also see the John Humphreys Loop Track along the way. It is a 500-metre track which takes you off the main track along a smaller path but you will end up back on the main track. At this junction you can turn right to go along the Coral Fern Gully Walk or straight, up the hill on the Warriors Walk.
Both walks are very similar you are taken through undulating hills through bracken fern and tall trees. Both of the tracks come out at the same place and then you are taken down to the river.
Walking alongside the river is really beautiful. There are lush ferns all the way along and in one area there is even a picnic table right beside the creek which would be a beautiful place for a picnic. This would be a great walk to take the kids on and you could even get a pram along it. It was definitely my favourite part of the walk.
If you choose to only do the river walk you will come to a bridge which is called Lizzie's Leap, this is the end of the River Walk. From here you can choose to go across the bridge and up some stairs to continue on either the Coral Fern Gully Walk or the Warriors Walk or you can retrace your steps to return to the car park.
I really like this park. It is very well maintained and you can see there has been a lot of love put into it. A great place for the people of Traralgon, Moe or Morwell as its only around a 30 minute drive.
